STILL a STAPLE

From a modest two-room salon in Manhattan to a cult 36-room skincare institution beloved by models, celebrities, and beauty obsessives across the globe, Mario Badescu is the quiet icon of skin health. Founded by a Romanian chemist with a vision for botanical-based formulas and bespoke skin solutions, the brand has been blending science, tradition, and a tailored touch since 1967. Now, 58 years on, we catch up with Melissa Hegazy, VP of Business Development, to explore how Mario Badescu continues to stay relevant in a beauty landscape obsessed with both minimalism and performance.

You didn’t start in skincare – what brought you here, and why have you stayed?

I was drawn to the skincare industry’s dynamic energy and fierce competition. I love working for a legacy brand like Mario Badescu, which has such a rich heritage. My career began in marketing for financial services, but a lateral move into beauty ignited my passion, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What does “business development” mean for a beauty brand, and how much is instinct versus strategy?

It mostly involves researching and strategising to identify target markets, countries, retailers, and product placement opportunities. Strategy is definitely the backbone, but instinct plays a key role, too. Through experience, you learn to understand trends and cultural nuances, which helps fine-tune decisions.

How do you decide when to launch a new product, and what makes the cut?

We rely on customer feedback from our spa and retail channels, paired with industry trends. Our laboratory collaborates closely with the team, and we’re hands-on at every stage, from concept to formulation, to ensure the product aligns with our brand and meets customer needs.

The Enzyme Cleansing Gel is a cult classic. Why do you think people stay loyal to it, despite so many new launches?

People stick with what works. They might experiment with new products, but the Enzyme Cleansing Gel remains a staple because it’s reliable. As a daily cleanser, it turns skincare into a ritual – customers love the lather, the scent, and how their skin feels afterwards.

What’s one skincare trend you believe in, and one you hope fades soon?

I’m all in for a multi-step routine: cleansing, toning, serums, and moisturising. It’s my daily ritual. But skin minimalism? That’s a tough one for me: I’m a multitasker, and I love my layers. I hope the “less is more” trend fades soon.

What’s one lesson from working in the industry that changed how you approach skincare?

Learning to decode ingredient lists was a game-changer. Understanding what each component does – and how it interacts with skin – completely reshaped how I choose and use products. I lean towards botanical ingredients.

As someone behind the scenes, how do you test products? Are you strict or experimental?

I’m experimental. I love playing with new products and seeing what’s out there. Testing competitors’ offerings keeps me informed and inspired. It’s essential to stay curious and open in this fast-moving industry.

Walk us through your morning routine – the real one.

Every morning, I start by cleansing with Mario Badescu’s Acne Facial Cleanser – it’s gentle yet effective at keeping breakouts at bay. Next, I tone with the Witch Hazel & Rosewater Toner, which leaves my skin refreshed and prepped. Then, I apply the Vitamin C Serum for a brightening boost, followed by sunscreen to protect my skin. Once my skincare is set, I move into my makeup routine, finishing with a spritz of either the Facial Spray with Aloe, Cucumber and Green Tea or the Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater for a dewy, hydrated glow.

Do you stick to your routine, or do you ever fall asleep with makeup on?

I’m religious about my routine. No matter how late I get home, I never skip it – cleansing, toning, the works. It’s non-negotiable.

What’s your ultimate “beauty reset” after a draining day?

A relaxing bath paired with a face mask – either the Brightening Mask with Vitamin C or the Super Collagen Mask. It’s the perfect way to unwind and recharge my skin.

Do you have a beauty icon who’s shaped your view on skincare or style?

Jennifer Lopez has always been one of my beauty icons. Her radiant, timeless skin inspires me, and she proves that skincare is key to looking amazing at any age.

What advice would you give to women in their 20s just starting their skincare journey? What should they avoid and lean into?

Avoid sun exposure – wear SPF daily! Lean into regular facials; if you’re in NYC or visiting; Mario Badescu’s classic European facial is a must. Choose products tailored to your skin type and drink plenty of water for that inner glow.

If we opened your travel bag right now, which Mario Badescu products would we definitely spot?

You’d find my Hypochlorous Acid Spray, Lip Balm, and Drying Lotion. They’re my non-negotiable travel essentials for keeping my skin fresh and flawless on the go.
