Trend vs Lux. Compromise.

Every day, whether you're perusing your wardrobe or browsing through shops, be it mass-market or boutique, you're faced with a choice: conforming to the crowd following tired trend bags and sneakers, or expressing your individuality through style, blending it with fashion, but with pieces that truly resonate with you.

Here's a well-established fact: the modern world no longer exclusively favours 'Heavy Lux'. While some find it comfortable, others view it as audacious, especially those who identify with old-money personas.

But here's the question: why not distinguish yourself through a timeless style that balances everything just right?

The trend towards faux fur over real, and costume jewellery over gold, is undeniable, yet it all boils down to your style in the end. From the perspective of luxury enthusiasts, this stylish departure may seem controversial and may not find favour with everyone. Rocking Adidas or Nike sneakers is now trendier than Chanel or Hermes. It's no longer solely a matter of class, but of relevance, irrespective of budget. Almost every fashion influencer or capital 'It-girl' flaunts the same 'must-have' bags. But do they genuinely love them or do they simply buy into the hype?

Play. Experiment. Embrace it.

Here are some pointers on crafting a personal style without blindly succumbing to trends, yet with no aggressive compulsion to splurge on high-end brands.

  • Substitute Adidas with Sporty & Rich.
  • Swap out casual sportswear for a touch of elegance by opting for chic pumps. Even a middle-class shoe brand will do.
  • Oversized clips and rings are perennial favourites, always in vogue. They lend an old-money allure to a basic blouse or sweater.
  • Instead of chasing trendy sneakers and bags, opt for pieces that are unique, perhaps even limited editions. The added exclusivity brings value, knowing it's not a staple in every fashionista's wardrobe. If you fancy a trend, go for unusual colours or pair it with unexpected items.
  • It would be delightful to pioneer your own trend and see it evolve. But do it for yourself, for your own enjoyment.
  • Incorporate feminine long dresses (à la ALAÏA) into your everyday ensembles, as those times are sorely missed. The dress can be bodycon or classic, adorned with a chic belt and oversized bracelets.
  • Hats and square berets are rare and chic additions to any outfit, provided they're worn appropriately.
  • Ditch the standard blazer worn by everyone; it's become mundane and no longer holds the allure of classic. Experiment with it—perhaps with a tie or other variations that eschew a flashy, tired vibe. It may pose a challenge, but it's certainly fun.
  • Trade in your jeans for tweed or angora suits (à la Loro Piana) and pair them with asymmetrical tops.
  • Hairpins, pearls, and other embellishments can transform the ordinary into something unique. But avoid going overboard; learn to play with them while maintaining elegance.

Remember: Heavy Lux shouldn't breed animosity towards everything expensive; rather, it should inspire one to strive harder to attain it.
