In a world full of trends, KARE stands apart by crafting pieces that leave no one indifferent. With its “Joy of Living” philosophy, the company has been creating bold and playful designs for 44 years.
In this exclusive interview for NARGIS Magazine, co-founder and CEO (which in KARE-speak stands for Chief in Energy and Optimism), Peter Schönhofen tells us where inspiration begins, how joy, travel, and cultural fusion shape every collection, and what values lie at the heart of the brand.
Where do you find inspiration for your creations?
The source of inspiration is daily life. And of course, we also draw from art and travel. I travel around two months each year to discover different markets and explore new places. Our pieces incorporate elements of modern African, Asian, and European design. What we particularly love about Africa is the sense of optimism. They’re always in a good mood. That’s something the world truly needs. People are often anxious about things they needn’t worry about. Therefore, it is part of our job to bring a sense of joy through our designs.
How do you strike a balance between style and functionality in your designs?
We don’t prioritise functionality. We prioritise the customers who are looking for creative designs and who love to express themselves through their surroundings – pieces that give them strength and energy. Of course, our pieces are functional but their true value lies in the mood they create, whether bringing joy or lifting someone’s spirits. Just as people differ around the world, so do tastes in design. That’s why we don’t stick to a single style. Each season, we introduce more than 100 new items.
Which trends in the world of furniture design do you find most significant?
We never work according to trends. What matters to us is bringing more colour and emotion into everyday objects. Especially in today’s world, filled with conflict and constant bad news, design should give people optimism.
What are your plans with ITALDIZAIN?
We have established an excellent partnership with ITALDIZAIN, and we are excited about what lies ahead. Our collaboration is set to grow even further – this is just the beginning. Let us surprise you, perhaps as soon as next year.
What advice would you give to future designers?
Pay attention to your customer. Understand what they can afford, what they truly enjoy, and whether your design brings them real joy.
