Lauren Rubinski. Gold, but not Old

What will take your cool street style to a more lux level? It’s undoubtedly the right choice of jewellery, and in particular, some opulent gold chains. Lauren Rubinski’s masterpieces create a unique universe of style and coordination, all encapsulated by the words – modernity, freshness, bravery, and unpredictability. Whether it’s a full-on gold Friday ensemble or the love beads symbolising friendship or relationships, every piece tells a story. Below is an exclusive interview, for NARGIS Magazine, with the founder of the brand, Lauren Rubinski himself – jump stylishly in the world of hip-hop jewellery and cuteness.

Could you tell us the story of the brand?
After 3 years of working on various projects, I made the decision to launch a new brand bearing my name. This marks the beginning of an entirely different universe – a different work with a fresh identity.

What is the main feature of the modern style of the brand?
I love to accumulate gold pieces – be it long chains, short chains, or varying lengths, with or without pendants. I also find delight in wearing just a choker paired with a single long chain. Through this unique style, you can truly mould and express your identity with the brand while remaining authentic to yourself. It’s a modern approach to wearing and collecting pieces, always prioritising comfort. The pieces are amazing for that, for my first goal: comfort, but also: chic, quality, and craftsmanship.

What personal experience did you gain from attending Paris Fashion Week?
I thoroughly loved to style customers and buyers during fashion week, as we had so many pieces to showcase and experiment with. I am grateful for the opportunity to explain my work, passion, and dedication to craftsmanship. Actually, each piece is meticulously crafted by hand in a family atelier in Italy.

How do you feel about digital marketing these days?
Digital marketing these days... can sometimes hold more significance than the product itself, and this is undeniably true. We have been lucky with our work. We started our brand solely with strong and aesthetically pleasing products. After 3 years of hard dedicated effort, we started to create something profoundly special to us.

How has your personal style influenced the brand’s masterpiece designs?
As I'm the first customer for every piece, everything I create is initially for myself. When I create a prototype, I’m the first customer, and if I don’t want to wear it – I choose not to sell it. I really want to wear them all – feel them, live with them.

When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career as a jewellery designer?
In 2009, at the age of 23, I embarked on creating my inaugural piece for my first brand, Pristine. It was beyond my imagination that our first retailer would be none other than Colette! Needless to say, I was so proud. It was at that moment I realised that this was the path I wanted to pursue in my life.

What motivates you the most?
To elevate myself as a creator, I aspire to crave more jewellery, embracing a limitless desire for new pieces. To create and progress in technical expertise.

From which other industries do you believe jewellery designers can draw inspiration for their work?
When you make art and sculpture, or even something totally different like my father’s work as a shirtmaker – the essence lies in the details. Every centimetre is crucial and meticulously attended to. Quality is everything, even on small pieces; this is my education. Consequently, all my creations are laden with numerous details, sometimes even concealing secret intricacies.

Please share with us an example of the most random place or thing from which you have drawn inspiration.
Iconic women, I admire them every day! Additionally, some museums captivate me to the extent that I can visit them repeatedly, up to 5 times.. Each visit is new, I observe it from a different angle and spot novel details each time.

Which masterpiece of the brand is the cutest? Be honest!
I hold a profound affection for the hatching ball because of the technique – it’s just wonderful! I’m in love with the open clover as well. I love... Well, actually, I don’t like to say I have a favourite piece.

What have you learned from mistakes on the job?
Not going too fast, as I'm usually acting in my life. This is actually something I’m still working on. Yet, I learned that with the right people, you can achieve greater heights.

Which clothing style is the best to match your brand?
During the daytime, I opt for a shirt and jeans paired with open sandals, a style I also carry into the night! For a feminine look, my favourite brand is Alaïa – I’m genuinely enamoured with his work. Alternatively, a white T-shirt, boxers, panties, or even going naked! Everything is perfect.

Do you have plans to release a new collection soon? If so, will it be a collaborative effort or an independent project?
It’s a bit of a secret, but I can share a glimpse. I’ve been working on this special piece for 3 years, and it’s quite intricate. We are to unveil it in June 2024. This product is not a collaboration.
