The iconic French high-art glass brand Lalique has released its Spring/Summer 2024 collection inspired by celestial scenes from ancient Greek mythology. The collection's name, Iconics Rose Nebula, refers to pink nebulous clouds (νεφέλη, nephélē).
Nephele, the goddess of clouds and the wife of Athamas, ruler of the Minyans in Boeotia, embodies a rare meteorological phenomenon. Among the celestial gods, Nephele is considered one of the most modest and virtuous Olympians. Created by Zeus from a cloud to Hera’s image, the heavenly goddess is a model of fidelity, peace, hospitality, and generosity.
Through the use of artificial intelligence, the new collection captures the effect of poetic and delicate pink nebulosity. The futuristic styling of the collection blurs the lines between mythology and reality, art and technology.
The twelve items in the collection have a thin pink coating which gives them a multidimensional effect and brings them to the status of an art object. Enhancing the feeling of a journey through time and space, pervasive motifs of the collection include characters from ancient Greek myths—sensual bacchantes, graceful panthers, and whimsical birds.
Throughout the 136-year history of the brand founded by the talented glassblower and jeweler René Lalique in 1888, its craftsmen and designers have been distinguished by the relentless pursuit of perfection in form and the exploration of color palettes in quest of new exquisite shades, conveying the unique aesthetic of Lalique.
To create the subtle pink shade Rose Nebula, Lalique's craftsmen use precious metals, including yellow gold. Each of the 12 pieces is unique: the distinctive shade is achieved through the combination of the glassblowers' craftsmanship and techniques of high-temperature firing and manual spraying of an innovative composition. The consistency of the gold particles changes at high temperatures, giving a colorless crystal a subtle, refined pink hue.
